Reporting a lost parcel

A share of these are not anybody behaving badly. Things get lost, delayed past sense, or delivered somewhere else, and a message written as an accusation makes an ordinary outcome harder to reach.

What you want out of it

A resend or a refund, decided quickly. Not an admission and not an explanation. The moment a message asks somebody to account for themselves, the reply stops being about the parcel and starts being about the accusation.

What the vendor sees

Either a routine loss, which they have handled before and have a policy for, or a customer who has already decided they were cheated. The first gets processed. The second gets a defensive reply, and the defensive reply is the one that ends up quoted in a dispute.

Quoting: the version that works better

Order 4417, placed on the second, window closed on the sixteenth, nothing arrived. Address as sent in the thread above and unchanged.

I am not suggesting anything went wrong at your end. What do you normally do at this point, resend or refund.

The weak one contains an allegation, a deadline and a threat, and it is answerable with a single denial. The strong one gives three dates, confirms the address was not the problem, explicitly withdraws the accusation and asks about their normal process. That last question is the one that gets an answer, because it lets somebody help without conceding anything.

What to leave out

  • Any theory about what happened. You have none and it can be argued with.
  • The word scam. It ends the useful part of the exchange permanently.
  • A deadline of your own. The window already gave you one.

What happens next

A resend, a refund, a split, or silence. Three of those four are fine outcomes. If it is silence and the window has closed, file, and paste this message as it stands, because a calm dated report with no accusation in it is the strongest opening a dispute can have.

Why the accusation costs you

Not on moral grounds. A message containing an allegation can be answered with a denial, and once there is a denial in the thread the exchange is about whether somebody is honest rather than about what to do next. A message containing three dates and no allegation has nothing to deny, so the only available reply is about the remedy.

The share that is nobody fault

Real and larger than people assume. Things get lost, held, delayed past any sensible window, or delivered to an address transcribed wrongly at some point in the chain. The process does not care about intent and neither should your message. You never have to prove anybody behaved badly, only that the thing did not arrive.
