Leaving feedback
Almost everybody leaves the same four words, which is why the aggregate figure on any vendor page has stopped separating anybody. Two sentences with a date in them are worth more than a hundred of those.
What makes it useful
Specifics that a reader can compare against their own situation. Timing, whether it matched the listing, and how any problem was handled. Praise on its own tells the next person nothing, because everybody writes praise and the scale has run out of room at the top.
What the next reader is looking for
Not whether you were happy. Whether the thing they are worried about happened to you. That is almost always one of three things: did it turn up, did it match, and what happened when it did not.
great vendor, fast shipping, will order again, recommended A+++
Ordered on the second, arrived on the eleventh, within the stated window. Matched the listing. One item was short and they refunded a quarter without an argument when I asked.
The weak one is indistinguishable from every other entry on the page and adds nothing to the aggregate it feeds. The strong one gives two dates, a match against the listing and one sentence about how a problem went, which is the only part anybody actually reads a review for.
What to leave out
- Anything identifying about you or where you are. Feedback is permanent and public.
- What you bought, beyond what the listing already says.
- Grudges from a dispute that went against you. Write it after it is settled or not at all.
When to write it
After everything is closed, not during. Feedback written mid dispute is leverage, it is visible to whoever is ruling, and it is read as pressure by everybody who sees it. See leaving bad feedback for the harder version.
Why the aggregate stopped working
Leaving a poor rating costs the person leaving it something. It invites a reply, it takes effort at the moment somebody wants to stop thinking about the order, and the easy option ends the interaction cleanly. Multiply that across every transaction and the scale collapses upward until almost everybody sits above ninety seven, at which point the number has run out of room to separate anybody.
What that means for yours
The number you leave is nearly worthless and the sentence you write is not. Two lines with dates in them are read by the next person deciding, and they are read precisely because so few entries contain anything to read.
