Refusing to pay outside escrow

Everything else on this site has some process behind it if it goes wrong. This has none. Not a strict policy, simply no mechanism at all, because the third party was never in the transaction.

Why the sentence should be written in advance

Because the request is designed to be reasonable and to arrive when you are already committed. By the time it appears you have exchanged messages, formed an impression and mentally bought the thing. Composing a refusal in that state is how people end up hedging, and a hedge gets a second attempt.

What it looks like when it arrives

What you are toldWhat it is
Escrow is having problemsA fault explanation attached to a request that benefits one side
It is faster this wayTrue and beside the point. Speed is what is being sold to you
There is a discount for itThe most effective version, because it feels like a negotiation you won
We have dealt beforeHistory belongs to an account, and accounts change hands quietly
My account is being restrictedA reason to hurry bolted onto a reason to bypass

Quoting: the version most people send

id rather not if thats ok? sorry, its just im new to this and a bit nervous, maybe next time when we know each other better

Strong versionexample written for this site
Quoting: the version that works better

Everything goes through escrow, no exceptions. If that does not work then no order, and no hard feelings either way.

The weak one gives four reasons, and every reason can be answered. It also promises a next time, which is an invitation. The strong one gives no reason at all, which is exactly what makes it unarguable, and it closes warmly so nobody has to lose face.

If you already sent it

  • Send nothing further. The usual follow up is a request for a second payment to fix a problem with the first.
  • Keep the thread. It is the only record.
  • Report the account so the pattern is visible to other people.
  • Do not negotiate. Somebody who took a payment this way is not moved by a reasonable message.

Refusing is not an accusation

A genuine vendor is not surprised by this refusal, because they know exactly how the request reads from your side. Being annoyed by a flat no is itself a piece of information.
