Turning down a bigger order

The push toward a larger order is ordinary commerce and usually not sinister. It is also the moment where a vague answer buys you three more messages of negotiation you did not want.

What you want out of it

The order you actually intended, at the size you decided on before anybody offered you anything. And no second attempt, which is a separate goal and the one that decides your wording.

What the vendor sees

A maybe or a no. Anything hedged is filed as a maybe, and a maybe gets followed up, because following up costs them one line and occasionally works. A plain no with no reason attached is filed as a no and closed.

Quoting: the version that works better

Just the one this time, thanks. Sticking to what I planned.

The weak one opens three doors: later, next time, and depending how this goes. Each is an invitation to ask again, and it hands over a reason that can be argued with. The strong one gives no reason, which is what makes it unarguable, and it stays friendly without conceding anything.

What to leave out

  • Reasons. Any reason you supply can be answered. No reason cannot.
  • Promises about future orders. They will be remembered and quoted back.
  • Anything about your budget. It tells somebody exactly where to aim next time.
  • An apology. You are buying what you came to buy.

When it is not an upsell

If the push comes with a discount for paying differently rather than for ordering more, that is not an upsell and it belongs on refusing to pay outside escrow. The two arrive in similar words and only one of them is ordinary.

What happens next

Usually the order proceeds as normal, because most of this is a script rather than pressure. If it is asked a second time after a plain no, that is worth noticing, and the same sentence works again without any softening. Repeating yourself word for word is the cheapest way to be clear that the answer is not moving.

Why the pull is genuine

Fee structures usually have a part that is roughly fixed per order, so a small order carries proportionally more of it. That makes larger orders better value per unit and the push toward them is arithmetic showing through rather than anybody being opportunistic. The counterweight is that the saving is a percentage and the exposure is the whole amount, and those are not the same kind of quantity.

Decide the number before you open the thread

A ceiling picked in advance is not available to be argued with in the moment, which is the same reason the flat refusals elsewhere on this site work. Pick the largest amount you could lose without it changing anything about your month, and treat that as the cap regardless of how good a particular offer looks once somebody is being friendly at you.
